It is sad to realise that India carry the highest number of diabetic patients . The number of young diabetics are showing an increasing trend. It is predicted that, by 2025, India will harbour more than 60 million diabetic patients and that cardiac diseases would be the leading cause of death. 1 out of 4 individual will be an Indian diabetic in the world, while 3 out of 4 will be from developing countries. Southern states like Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu are heavily affected.
There are differences in etiology for diabetes in urban and rural population in India. In rural India, poverty which in turn can lead to low birth weight babies has been found to be an important reason for diabetes, apart from genetic predisposition. They are also opting for more sedentary lifestyle like their urban counterparts. The time of detection is delayed in rural population, as access to medical care facilities are less and their economic background prohibit them from seeking medical help from private practitioners in urban areas.
The urban scenario is still worse. Young children tend to become obese due to various reasons. They are overburdened with home work from school. They play less and are more interested in cartoon networks and computer games. They eat more junk foods while doing these activities. They become fatter day by day and these children are more prone to develop diabetes in their later life early.
The employees who are young are in great mental stress due to job as well as financial reasons. They won't allot time for exercises and are attracted by junk food ads which make them fatty. It has been found that those working in software companies are having higher incidence of diabetes due to above mentioned reasons and their altered sleep habits.
Doctors are not an exemption. Because of highly sedentary life they also succumb to obesity early. They may neglect symptoms and are reluctant to seek proper medical advice.
Hence younger generation should be prepared to accept the reality and take necessary life style modification measures to tackle the menace. We hope that the young and charming of today will take necessary steps to tide over the upcoming disaster.
